Why people should talk to others...
That is the name I picked for this post, but it doesn't quite peg what I am trying to say. Anyways on to the rant... and yes this will be a rant!
Some of you may know that I a freelance audio engineer. My current client is a church in Orange County, CA. I had lunch with a college about a week ago, and learned that the church had removed the soundboard that was in the main sanctuary and sent it off for repair. That alone is just a band-aid cause this board although awesome in its time is quite a few years past its prime. So I came into work today expecting a different soundboard where the old one was.... What I did not expect was that the system would not be even remotely dialed in. (warning technical jargon to follow) The line leveler was not configured for the new board, the compressors were not/are not plugged in, one of the recorders is routed back to work as a player as well as a recorder, and the pastor's microphone was not even routed through the dbx channel strips purchased specifically for his microphone.
I spent the first 2 hours of my time at work, what was supposed to be my sound check "fixing" all the things that was not done when they decided to put the current board in the main sanctuary. This should never have had to happen, someone should have checked everything and made it all work before even thinking of having a service. Plain and simple.
Have I heard from the person that was in charge of changing out the soundboard? NO, I heard not from the person that was supposed to tell me. I heard from the person I had lunch with, and I heard from the speaker for the service I run. But not ONCE have I heard from the person whose job it should be to keep me informed. I only come in once a week. I just would have liked a phone call from him.
Ok, I feel a little bit better. Thanks for reading.

Why electronics should come with manuals!!!
I'm a film student at a junior college in Orange County, CA. Anyways, it is my job on my current project to do the post work. Normally this would be fine, but I am working with a Panasonic AG-DVX100b, a camera I have never worked with before...
My first issue came into play once I had finished logging all my clips in Final Cut Pro... It kept telling me the tape is not threaded... I am a film STUDENT I didn't know what that meant... google here I come. So after finding out that a tape that is not threaded is a tape the camera is not loading correctly... I was looking to find out why. Again google here I come... but this time google failed me!!! No answers to my question! But there was a button on the camera labeled VCR so i was trying to see if putting the camera in that mode would allow this to work... but I couldn't figure out how. So google here I come... this time google worked and brought me to the Panasonic site for the user manual, but the manual was no where to be found!!!! So I plugged back into the search engine hive mind and went looking again. This time I found it.. the user manual for the camera I have been using.
And the answer to my question... HOW THE HELL DO I CAPTURE THIS FOOTAGE?!?!?!?! was answered... push an unlabeled button on the back of the camera next to 2 lights... on labeled camera, one labeled VCR... voila it all works.
Now if only the camera had come with a manual in the first place the better part of a Saturday would not have been wasted searching the deepest depths of the Internet and the archives of video forums and educational resources everywhere.
